A Euroskeptic Candidate?

ZAGREB, Croatia--Croatia may have gained candidate status with the EU, but public support for membership has dropped sharply over the last few months, prompting the government to rethink its media strategy.

For the first time since the small country broke away from Yugoslavia in 1991 and declared a future in Europe to be its strategic goal, support for EU accession has dropped below 50 percent.

Faltering poll numbers came as a setback for the conservative government of Prime Minister Ivo Sanader just as it received news from Brussels on the European Commission’s pre-accession strategy for Croatia. The strategy, made public on 6 October, is part of the EU’s next enlargement package and also includes Bulgaria, Romania, and Turkey.
