Russia likely to agree to the Construction of Burgas-Alexandroupolis Gas Pipeline

Russia is likely to agree to the construction of the Burgas-Alexandroupolis gas pipeline provided that Russian companies receive a good part of the construction work at the Belene nuclear plant, daily Pari reported on Friday, October 15.

According to Pari daily, the matter will be on the top of the agenda during the visit of Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Fradkov to Sofia on October 19.

At the end of last year the government decided to complete the mothballed project in Belene, on the Danube River 250 kilometres northeast of Sofia, in a bid to make for the loss of four ageing 440-MW reactors at its other nuclear plant in Kozloduy. The Parsons consultants for the Belene project have advised that the country repairs two Russian-made VVER 1,000-MW.

A Czech-made 1,000-MW unit of the Russian VVER-1,000 type was supplied at the Belene site in the late 1980s and is still stored there. The same-type reactors are currently operating in Bulgaria's Kozloduy power plant (units 5 and 6) and in the Czech Temelin power plant.
