Belka's Controversial Appointments; Orlen Ananicz; Radziwill; Minor

Jacek Walczykowski, who was chosen PKN Orlen president on Thursday, appears to have shady past.

According to Rzeczpospolita, in August 2003 the Central Bureau for Investigation (CBS) started looking into accusations concerning his mismanagement of Elektrim between 1999-2002, when he was a member of the company's management board.

Andrzej Ananicz will become the head of the Intelligence Agency (AW). This was Marek Belka's final decision after his consultation with President Kwasniewski on Saturday. The Prime Minister informed that the President accepted Ananicz as a candidate for the post. Ananicz is now in Ankara, where he is closing his work as Poland's ambassador in Turkey. His appointment comes amid strong opposition from many Democratic Left Alliance (SLD) deputies, especially from Defense Minister Jerzy Szmajdzinski.

Democratic Left Alliance (SLD) leader Krzysztof Janik is trying to smooth move another quarrel that is emerging between the party and Prime Minister Marek Belka. This time it concerns Anna Radziwill, whose candidature for the Deputy Education Minister was presented by Bellka to the SLD presidium. She is backed by the Education Minister, but strongly opposed by some SLD deputies. Belka still has about 300 more appointments to make.

Minor, a trusted member of the SLD, becomes Chief Schools' Inspector in Opole. He previously twice resigned from the office amid scandals. His last resignation was linked to the leak of Matura exam questions.
