Serbia and Montenegro's FM Wants to Drop Lawsuit against NATO

Serbia and Montenegro's Foreign Minister Vuk Draskovic said in Belgrade on 21 July that the government should drop its lawsuit against NATO dating back to 1999 during the rule of former Yugoslav President Slobodan Milosevic, Reuters reported.

"It is impossible to build relations of alliance and friendship on the basis of a lawsuit," he told reporters after talks with his Dutch counterpart Ben Bot.

The Netherlands belongs to NATO and holds the rotating EU Presidency. The lawsuit and Belgrade's failure to cooperate fully with the Hague-based war crimes tribunal are two reasons why Serbia and Montenegro was not admitted to NATO's Partnership for Peace program at the Atlantic alliance's June Istanbul summit.

Draskovic, who is a strong proponent of his country's Euro-Atlantic integration, also called on neighboring Bosnia and Croatia to drop their Milosevic-era lawsuits against his country.
