NIK Slams Miller for Bungling Reworked Yamal Gas Agreement

The Supreme Board of Inspection (NIK) has accused former Prime Minister Leszek Miller's Cabinet of outrageous errors when renegotiating the so-called Yamal agreement regarding supplies of natural gas from Russia.

The agreement was initially signed in 1993, but it envisaged levels of gas imports from Russia that were far too high, with Poland having to pay for the entire amount regardless of actual demand.

In 2003, Miller's government renegotiated the deal, limiting future supplies by 26.3%, but the NIK claims that the deal nevertheless limits the possibilities of importing gas from other countries.

The NIK also charged that governmental negotiations between Poland and Russia were carried out in violation of the law on international agreements.
