EU's concept of "energy Solidarity" falls far short of Poland's hopes

After Russia blocked Ukraine's gas supply earlier this year, many EU member states became aware of the significance of maintaining "energy solidarity".

However, EU leaders did not accept the proposal of the Polish Prime Minister to create a new energy organization, which would be modeled on NATO.

Premier Marcinkiewicz does not regard this as a defeat, as he believes that the energy strategy being prepared by the European Commission contains numerous ideas proposed by Poland, and the principle of solidarity in particular.

Solidarity as proposed by Brussels is, however, much weaker than in the Polish project as it only envisages obscurely defined co-operation in the event of a gas supply failure, but does not guarantee the supply of energy to the country which is affected.
