Hiller replaces Kovacs

In line with expectations, Cultural Heritage Minister Istvan Hiller was elected President of the Hungarian Socialist Party (MSzP) last weekend with a comfortable 396 votes compared to 152 for his opponent Imre Szekeres.

The latter, who belongs to the party's middle generation and is viewed as a "counterweight” to the new generation of power brokers including Prime Minister Ferenc Gyurcsany and his ally Hiller, in turn secured an unexpected victory in the subsequent run for Deputy President against Defense Minister Ferenc Juhasz, another trusted supporter of Gyurcsany.

Juhasz, along with Istvan Ujhelyi, will serve as Vice President of MSzP; Gabor Simon was elected President of the National Board.
