Serbian President Denies He is trying to Topple Government

Serbian President Boris Tadic said in Belgrade on 7 October that his recent remarks critical of Prime Minister Vojislav Kostunica's government should not be understood as an attempt to topple it, Reuters reported.

"I don't have a right to overthrow it," he noted.

Referring to a proposal by the Serbian Radical Party (SRS) for Tadic's recall, he said that he is "fully ready to face [an investigation] by the nation."

He charged, however, that his nationalist critics have "no understanding...of how to fight for our national interests".

Elsewhere, Kostunica said that he and the government stand by their decision to advise Kosova's Serbian minority to boycott the 23 October parliamentary elections there, which Tadic has criticized.
