Poland to sign oil contracts with Kuwait and Kazakhstan?

One of the main aims of the government is to ensure the nation's energy security. The Cabinet wants to accomplish this by diversifying sources of oil and gas supply for Poland and decreasing its dependence on Russia. The planned March visit of Prime Minister Jarosław Kaczyński to Kuwait is to serve this aim.

The official visit envisages signing a memorandum, and possibly even contracts with local companies. Stanisław Kogut, a Law and Justice (PiS) Senator said that he hopes that Lotos Group will sign one of the contracts. The visit to Kuwait is also to prepare grounds for the June visit of Emir Sabah-Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah to Poland.

The representatives of the Lotos Group confirmed that they will take part in this visit, however, they say it is too early to comment on their prospective cooperation with Kuwaiti companies. For a long time Lotos has been focusing on establishing good relations with Kuwait. In 2006 it signed a deal for two test oil supplies from Kuwait. The visit of the Prime Minister will be a continuation of earlier contacts established during the Polish-Kuwaiti days held in November.

In related news, President Lech Kaczyński is planning to visit Kazakhstan to support PKN Orlen's attempts to sign a contract with KazMunaiGaz for exploitation of oil deposits.
