PM to meet PO leader to discuss local election crisis

Prime Minister Jaroslaw Kaczynski agreed to meet Civic Platform (PO) leader Donald Tusk today to discuss possible solutions to the crisis surrounding the late filing of financial declarations by politicians elected in last year's local elections.

Among the prominent politicians embroiled in the issue are PO's Hanna Gronkiewicz-Waltz, the newly-elected mayor of Warsaw, who now faces the loss of her post and early elections. PO politicians hope the men can hammer out an agreement that helps prevent early elections in many parts of the country.

Meanwhile, a group of respected legal experts have called on Parliament to pass an emergency "amnesty" bill that absolves the local politicians and extends the "unreasonably short" deadlines for the filing of financial declarations. Otherwise, they said, the country faces months of acrimonious legal wrangles.
