Ruling parties want to investigate the activities of Leszek Balcerowicz

The conflict between Leszek Balcerowicz, the president of the Polish National Bank (NBP) and the Commission on Banking Supervision on the one side and the combined forces of Law and Justice (PiS) and the members of Stabilisation Pact (Self-defense and the League of Polish Families) on the other seems to have been aggravated.

PiS wants to call a Sejm court of inquiry to investigate the methods of Leszek Balcerowicz and the Commission on Banking Supervision (KNB) over the past seventeen years. It is possible that former presidents of NBP Grzegorz Wojtowicz and Hanna Gronkiewicz-Waltz will be also summoned to appear in front of the Court of inquiry.

According to Mr. Balcerowicz, it is political revenge for his excluding of Cezary Mech, vice minister of Finance and the Ministry of Treasury from proceedings over the consent for UniCredito to take over BPH. On Friday, Roman Giertych, the leader of LPR threatened to put Mr. Balcerowicz in front of the State Tribunal. "The activities of the NBP and the KNB lead to solutions that are unfavourable for the Polish banking system. 70% of banks are under the control of foreign investors," said Przemyslaw Gosiewski, chairman of PiS's parliamentary club on Sunday.
