Moldovan Parliament Strips Three Opposition Deputies of Immunity

The Moldovan parliament on 13 October lifted the immunity from prosecution of Serafim Urechean, Ion Ciontoloi, and Vasile Colta, deputies of the opposition Our Moldova Alliance (AMN), BASA reported.

The move was supported by 54 votes from the Communist Party caucus, while other parliamentary groups did not participate in the vote. AMN Deputy Chairman Veaceslav Untila described the decision as "a shameful vote that marks the beginning of the demolition of democracy in the country."

The Prosecutor-General's Office has accused the three lawmakers of abuse of office. In particular, Urechean is charged with inflicting damage of some $240,000 on the state while he was mayor of Chisinau.
